Hi Everybody,
First I apologize for my english 'cause I'm French ... I'm thinking about the genetic transmission of Albino Strain and also Sunglow strain. I read a lot of informations on breeder website and I just would like to clarify some "headached" points so Please, could you confirm or correct those information :1?- Albino KAHL x Albino KAHL = impossible 2?- Albino KAHL x Albino SHARP = Het that carrying both KAHL & SHARP albino strain 3?- Albino SHARP x Albino SHARP = Albino SHARP 5- If I understand Sunglow are Albino Hypo so they are a form of albinism. I know that many breeder cross Albino with Sunglow and have many success with. It's here that I ask some question. So how does it work with the genetic transmission between Sunglow KAHL and SHARP Strains ? Doest it work like Albino KAHL and SHARP ? On many website I saw : Albino x Sunglow = 50% Albino , 50% Sunglow - ok that ![]() but which strain Albino KAHL x Sunglow KAHL ? does it possible ? Albino KAHL x Sunglow SHARP ? does it work ? Albino SHARP x Sunglow SHARP ? logically it's possible, right ? And what about Sunglow KAHL x Sunglow SHARP = possible result ? Thanks for your help Sebastien from French West Indies |

I'll try and answer your questions in order. #1. Not impossible. A Kahl Albino and a Kahl albino will produce 100% Kahl Albino offspring. BUT, ethically, it should NEVER be done. Many have already done so, and as a result many offspring are now being born with one or no eyes at all. Some Kahl Albino are born perfect in appearance, but create offspring with the missing eyes. This lends to the idea that it may pass on recessively. #2 Never been proved. Basic Mendelian genetics says that they carry both genes, but to the best of my knowledge, it's never been proved. #3 Yes, Sharp Albino to a Sharp Albino will produce 100% Sharp Albino offspring. BUT, now that people have done the same with the Sharp line as the Kahl line, the very same eye problems are popping up. This combination should NEVER be tried as well, and would be considered an unethical pairing in many peoples eyes. When dealing with Sunglows, you are dealing with Albinos. They are simply Hypo Albinos. ALL the same rules apply to those pairs. So, breeding an Albino to a Sunglow = unethical breeding practices whether it's a Kahl or a Sharp line. If you want to produce strong healthy animals, you have to begin with strong healthy genetics. Be smart and don't try the same short cuts that so many others have already done. The gene pool is screwed enough already. LOL Might take a little longer, but you will produce healthier offspring. ![]() Hope that helps. Rick

Hi Rick !
Yes, it's a good place here lol Thanks for your reply and yes that help me much. I also want to "reassure" you because I do not intend to practice this kind of cross. I am aware about the defects... I raise and breed birds too and we have the same problem for example : crossing albino budgies or other parakeet leads birds with decreased size and also unhealthy. I just wanted some help to understand the genetic pairing between those strain , it is merely theoretical. In all case thank you. Rgds Sebastien |

Yes, as far as I know, it would be in theory, that the offspring from a Sharp and Kahl Albino pairing would yield animals double het for both strains.
I'm a bit behind since my career kicked into gear, so I am not that up to date on a lot of things. But this has been talked about many times on other forums in the past. It's common belief that they are het for both, but no body has proved it yet that I know of. Rick
